ON THIS DAY in 1997 VRA avoided relegation by just one run as they beat K Gandhi in a play-off match at De Diepput. As the Hoofdklasse was being reduced from twelve teams to ten, the loser of this match would be relegated, and VRA battled their way to 151 for nine in their 55 overs, Joost Leemhuis top-scoring with 34 not out and JM Iqbal taking four for 31. Emmerson Trotman held the Gandhi innings together with 60, but when he was stumped off the penultimate ball with just two needed and the last man was run out off the next, VRA had achieved an extraordinary victory. The following season they were champions.
30 August
ON THIS DAY in 1942 D Prent took eight for 13 in eight overs as ACC dismissed VOC for 31 in their first innings at Laag Zestienhoven. After ACC posted 163 in reply, Prent claimed another six wickets to finish with match figures of 14 for 27 and VOC were all out a second time for 75, losing by an innings and 57 runs.

ON THIS DAY in 1994 Huib Visée (103 not out) and Robert van Oosterom (110) put on 212 for the second wicket for HBS against Quick Haag at Craeyenhout. HBS closed on 261 for two, and Quick could only manage 223 for eight in reply.

ON THIS DAY in 1932 Wim Glerum made an unbeaten 191 out of VRA’s 279 all out against PW Enschede at Het Wageler. PW were dismissed for 109 in reply, but they did better in their second innings, reaching 101 for one by the close of play.
27 August
ON THIS DAY in 1988 Peter Cantrell became the first player to reach 1000 runs in a Dutch competition season when he made 46 for Kampong against Bloemendaal at the Donkerelaan. Cantrell went on to make a total of 1214 runs at an average of 110.36, including three centuries and eight fifties.
26 August
ON THIS DAY in 1900 Carstjan Posthuma took eight for 5 in 5.5 overs for Rood en Wit against Hercules at the Meerweg as the Utrecht side were dismissed for 13 in their first innings. He then claimed eight for 8 in 6.2 overs when they batted again, for match figures of 16 for 13 from 73 deliveries. In between Rood en Wit made 58, enabling them to win by an innings and 25 runs. In 1973 10-man VRA were dismissed for 22 by Hercules at Voordorp, RE Ambler taking five for 8 in 8.3 overs. At the other extreme, in 2001 Craig Cumming (184) and Maurits Houben (90 not out) put on 272 for VRA’s third wicket against Voorburg in Amstelveen; VRA closed on 356 for three, and Voorburg were on 138 for four when rain stopped play.

ON THIS DAY in 1940 VOC made 360 for seven against Sparta at Spangen; three batsmen made half-centuries, the highest opener Arie Terwiel’s 80. He then took seven for 29 as Sparta were dismissed for 99, and another three for 29 when they followed on. But they managed to hold on, and were 83 for four at the close.

ON THIS DAY in 1913 HCC, having bowled Hilversum out for 51 at De Diepput, proceeded to post an all-time record total of 582 for eight, EH La Chapelle and C van Loon each making 110, Van Loon remaining not out.
23 August
ON THIS DAY in 2009 Peter Borren made 91 from 45 balls with ten fours and six sixes for VRA against VVV at Het Loopveld East, and with Gerrie Snyman contributing 93 VRA compiled 358 for eight. They then dismissed the home side for 89, Ben Goedegebuur taking four for 29.
22 August
ON THIS DAY in 2009 Michael Dighton produced a fine all-round performance for VOC against HCC at the Hazelaarweg, taking four for 41 as the Hagenaars reached 234 for nine and then making an unbeaten 110 to see his side to their target with seven wickets in hand and five overs to spare.

ON THIS DAY in 2005 George Bailey (149) and Jelte Schoonheim (68) shared a partnership of 176 for VOC’s fourth wicket against VRA at Amstelveen. VOC closed on 316 for nine, and VRA, despite 85 from Darrin Murray, could only manage 301 for nine in reply.
20 August
ON THIS DAY in 2000 Darron Reekers hit 16 sixes (and eight fours) in a knock of 164 for Quick Haag against Kon UD at Nieuw Hanenburg. Reekers completely dominated Quick’s innings of 286 all out, and UD reached 208 in reply, helped by a fifth-wicket stand of 120 between Apie van Nierop and Steven Lubbers.
19 August
ON THIS DAY in 1933 W van den Bosch made 231 not out for HCC 1 against HCC 2 at De Diepput. The senior side declared at 309 for four and then dismissed their club-mates for 96, Van den Bosch taking four for 35.
18 August
ON THIS DAY in 1895 eight-man HCC neverthess contrived to beat a full-strength Rood en Wit by 4 runs at the Meerweg; with Cees Feith making 45 HCC reached 103, and then bowled the home side out for 98, JWG Coops taking six for 32. In 2002 Jinnah’s brief career in the top flight came to a dramatic end when factional fighting between rival teams caused the match against Hermes-DVS to be abandoned; after an inquiry, Jinnah were ejected from the KNCB. In 2019 Voorburg secured a dramatic last-ball victory over VRA in Amstelveen. In a match reduced to 43 overs VRA had posted 218 for seven, Peter Borren making a 72-ball 87 not out, but Nic Smit matched this with an unbeaten 87 of his own, and with two needed off the final delivery Viv Kingma lofted a drive to give his side a three-wicket win.
17 August
ON THIS DAY in 1975 Pim van der Vegt (106 not out) and Peter van Wel (81 not out) added 177 in an unbroken second-wicket partnership for HBS against HCC at Craeyenhout. HBS declared at 203 for one, and with Peter Le Noble taking seven for 54 bowled the visitors out for 182.
16 August
ON THIS DAY in 1925 Prinses Wilhelmina Enschede were dismissed for 22 in their first innings against HCC I at Het Wageler, Max Jansen taking six for 7 in eight overs. HCC then made 163, and with Jansen picking up another seven wickets for match figures of 13 for 47 PW were bowled out a second time for 78. In 2015 VOC were all out for 45 against ACC at Het Loopveld West; the home side needed just 11.4 overs to knock off the runs, and won by 8 wickets.
15 August
ON THIS DAY in 1897 HCC were dismissed for 21 in their second innings of a match against Ajax Leiden at De Diepput. They had made 75 in their first knock (Martinus Beijerinck taking seven for 32), and led by 3 on the first innings. But with Diederik Beijerinck producing figures of 13 – 10 – 3 – 7 in their second attempt Ajax were left with just 25 to make, and they achieved this for the loss of one wicket.
14 August
ON THIS DAY in 2016 Saqib Zulfiqar had figures of 9.4 – 3 – 12 – 5 (including four wides!) as he spun ACC to victory over Dosti at Het Loopveld West; ACC battled their way to 157 for nine in their 50 overs, but thanks to Saqib they were able to bowl Dosti out for just 92. On a generally good day for the bowlers, Hermes-DVS squeezed home with just two balls to spare against VOC at the Hazelaarweg; despite Jeandré Jumat’s 98 not out and three for 49, Hermes were able to overhaul VOC’s 176 for five to win by 5 wickets.
13 August
ON THIS DAY in 1916 Johan Hisgen made 170 for VRA against Hermes at the Amsterdam Stadium, hitting 20 fours and seven sixes. VRA declared on 339 for five, and then dismissed Hermes for 142, Hisgen taking six for 25 in an outstanding all-round effort.
12 August
ON THIS DAY in 1917 C van Loon took six for 9 and six for 12 for HCC at Laag Zestienhoven as VOC, replying to the visitors’ 155, were bundled out for 27 and 40. In 1962 Ernst Vriens claimed all ten wickets at a cost of 41 runs to dismiss ACC for 117 at the Twentsche Bank ground in Amstelveen. But then HCC were all out for 64, Vriens top-scoring with 18!
11 August
ON THIS DAY in 1912 L van Gogh made 203 for Rood en Wit against Haarlem at the Spanjaardslaan. Chasing Haarlem’s 144 all out, Rood en Wit reached 424 for five by the close. At the other extreme, on the same day, JWG Coops took eight wickets for 9 runs (in nine overs, with four maidens) as Volharding collapsed to 36 all out in reply to HCC’s 235 (C van Loon 104) at the Kruislaan.

ON THIS DAY in 1947 Sparta 1888 were all out for 19 against VOC at Laag Zestienhoven. They had earlier dismissed the home side for 66, LJ de Bruin taking five for 27, but they were unable to withstand the bowling of Arie Terwiel, who claimed seven for 10 in 10 overs with four maidens.

ON THIS DAY in 2015 Eric Szwarczynski hit 25 fours in his 154-ball innings of 179 for VRA against HBS at Amstelveen. VRA ended on 341 for three, and then dismissed HBS for 209, Adeel Raja taking four for 26.
8 August
ON THIS DAY in 1918 Prisoners of War A posted 471 for nine declared in a three-day match against Prisoners of War B at the Spanjaardslaan, Humphrey Forman (121) and Gustavus Fowke (86 not out) sharing a big partnership for the seventh wicket. The B side had made 282 in their first innings, but they were bundled out in the second for 130 (Fowke taking four for 39 and GG Graves four for 20), and lost by an innings and 59 runs.
7 August
ON THIS DAY in 1988 Kon. UD won a thriller against HCC at De Diepput. Chasing HCC’s 177 for seven in 60 overs, UD lost their ninth wicket with eight runs still required, but last man Rutger Loenen hung on with Steven Lubbers, and the Deventer side squeezed home with 16 deliveries to spare.

ON THIS DAY in 1893 eight-man Maas CC were all out for 5 in their second innings against Amstel’s at Velzen. They were following on, having earlier made 27 in reply to Amstel’s 113. On the same day Achilles Leiden, with one player more, made 13 and 39 at De Diepput against HCC’s 108. In 2000 Ahmed Zulfiqar (75) and Tim de Leede (135) put on 231 for Voorburg’s second wicket against Kon. UD at Duivesteijn. Voorburg finished with 317 for seven, and then restricted UD to 180 for eight.
5 August
ON THIS DAY in 2018 Rehmat Zulfiqar hit a record 16 sixes in his innings of 188 (from 156 deliveries) for ACC against Quick Haag at De Diepput No. 2 ground; he also struck 11 fours. ACC finished with 311 for seven, and Quick were then dismissed for 293, Geert Maarten Mol making 101.
4 August
ON THIS DAY in 1895 Amstel’s played with only eight men against HCC at De Diepput and still managed to lose by just 2 runs. They were dismissed for 35 in reply to HCC’s first-innings total of 51, and then bowled out their opposition a second time for 42. Needing 59 to win they made 56; D van den Berg took 12 wickets in the match for 35 runs, and only five batsmen reached double figures in any of the four innings. At the other extreme, in 2013 Ben Cooper made 202 for VRA against Hermes-DVS at Amstelveen, the first double-century for 18 years. Cooper hit 25 fours and five sixes, a record 31 boundaries in total.
3 August
ON THIS DAY in 1913 JJ Swens (94) and WGL van Spengler (101 not out) added 199 for Rood en Wit’s fifth wicket against Volharding at the Kruislaan in Amsterdam. Volharding had made only 115, W van Waveren taking eight for 45, and Rood en Wit had reached 290 for six when stumps were drawn.

ON THIS DAY in 1986 Ewoud de Man produced an outstanding all-round performance for VRA against Kon. UD in Amstelveen. After taking five for 36 in UD’s total of 201 for seven De Man contributed 81 with the bat and in a thrilling finish VRA won by three wickets off the penultimate ball of the game.
1 August
ON THIS DAY in 1965 Ernst Vriens took eight for 43 for HCC against Quick Haag at Nieuw Hanenburg. But Quick made 153 and HCC were bundled out for 141, Coen Burki taking five for 38 for Quick. Vriens bowled his side to victory eleven years later, however, this time against Hercules Utrecht: HCC managed only 105, but Vriens, bowling 29 overs unchanged with 11 maidens, took five for 44 and Hercules were all out for 100.
31 July
ON THIS DAY in 1983 Emmerson Trotman made 137 out of Rood en Wit’s total of 252 against VOC at the Spanjaardslaan, hitting eight fours and six sixes. His effort was in vain, however, as 82 from Rob Lifman and 53 not out from Tony Opatha enabled VOC to reach their target with five wickets in hand.

ON THIS DAY in 2006 Quick Haag keeper Bob van Gigch took seven catches in an innings against Excelsior ’20 at Nieuw Hanenburg. Chasing Quick’s 178, Excelsior were soon reduced to 30 for four, and were eventually all out for 102, all ten wickets having fallen to catches.

ON THIS DAY in 1990 VRA pulled off a thrilling last-over victory over Quick Haag at Nieuw Hanenburg. Nolan Clarke made 112 in Quick’s total of 243, and then opener Apie van Nierop responded with 103 for VRA. Quick seemed to have regained the upper hand at 216 for seven, but Tjade Groot was able to guide his side to a two-wicket win with three deliveries to spare.
28 July
ON THIS DAY in 1929 E den Hartog took sixteen wickets in the match at a cost of 79 runs (eight for 43 and eight for 36) for Quick Nijmegen against Ajax Leiden in Leiden. 32 behind on the first innings, Quick dismissed the home side for 90 in the second, and went on to win by 7 wickets, needing only 13 overs to make the 125 they had been set. In 1940 Arie Terwiel took all ten wickets for 51 for VOC against HCC at Spangen. In 2013 Stef Myburgh mde 136 off just 58 deliveries for Excelsior ’20 against HBS at Craeyenhout, hitting 12 fours and 12 sixes.

ON THIS DAY in 1941 Koos Oosterholt took all ten wickets for 58 runs for Excelsior ’20 against HCC 1 at De Diepput. His efforts were in vain, however: Excelsior were defending only 125 (AMJ de Beus had claimed seven for 42 for HCC), and the home side reached 167 all out in reply, despite Oosterholt’s heroics.

ON THIS DAY in 1981 Hans Poederbach became the first keeper in the competition to claim seven victims in an innings; with five catches and two stumpings, he helped HBS contain VOC to 190 for nine at Craeyenhout, but it was in vain as HBS in turn collapsed to 71 all out and lost by 119 runs.
25 July
ON THIS DAY in 1926 Arie Terwiel took eight for 3 (in 10 overs with eight maidens) for Quick Nijmegen to dismiss Hilversum for 40 at Dennenstraat and ensure outright victory for his side. Hilversum had made 74 in their first innings, Terwiel having match figures of 14 for 25, and Quick won by an inning and 17 runs.
24 July
ON THIS DAY in 1994 Darrin Murray and Ewoud de Man put on 220 for the second wicket for VRA against VOC at Laag Zestienhoven; Murray made 155, facing 165 deliveries and 18 fours and six sixes. VRA closed on 259 for six, but half-centuries from Nathan Astle, Klaas-Jan van Noortwijk and Davy Bakker enabled the home side to reach their target for the loss of four wickets and with an over to spare. In 2005 Jeroen Smits took six catches and completed a stumping for HCC against Excelsior ’20 at De Diepput, becoming the second keeper to have seven victims in an innings.

ON THIS DAY in 1950 Piet Sanders took all ten wickets for 16 runs for ACC against Rood en Wit at the Twentsche Bank Ground in Amstelveen; he bowled 18.4 overs with 8 maidens. Rood en Wit were all out for 62, and ACC won by five wickets on the first innings.

ON THIS DAY in 1990 Quick Haag beat Excelsior ’20 by 3 runs in a thrilling match at Nieuw Hanenburg which went down to the final delivery. David Houghton made 139 out of the home side’s total of 214, and at 191 for five, with Tim Zoehrer and Luuk van Troost at the crease. But then both were caught behind by Reinier van Es off the bowling of Friso Groen, and Excelsior found themselves needing a boundary off the last ball with the last pair together. It ended with a run-out, and Quick squeezed home.
21 July
ON THIS DAY in 2019 Prathamesh Dake performed the hat-trick for Quick Haag against HBS at Nieuw Hanenburg. The first of his three wickets was Wesley Barresi, but the Dutch international had made 110 and HBS finished on 323 for seven, Dake taking three for 41. Quick had no answer and were dismissed for 142, Zak Gibson taking four for 16 and Berend Westdijk three for 27.
20 July
ON THIS DAY in 1940 CA Huinder took nine for 30 for HBS in the second innings of a two-day match against HCC II at De Diepput. HCC had established a lead of 18 on the first day, but Huinder’s efforts restricted them to 121 in their second knock, and HBS reached their target of 140 for the loss of five wickets to secure a memorable victory.
19 July
ON THIS DAY in 1925 Dé Kessler broke the Dutch record for an individual innings, making 227 for Hilversum against PW Enschede the ground he had himself created in Bilthoven. Kessler shared an opening stand of 351 – another record – with WGL von Spengler, who made 127, and Hilversum declared on 367 for two before dismissing PW for 69 (Kessler three for 13). The Enschede side were able to confine Hilversum to first-innings points, however, finishing on 49 for four when they followed on.
18 July
ON THIS DAY in 2010 HCC beat Excelsior ’20 by 2 runs in a tense thriller at Thurlede. HCC made 264 for six, largely thanks to a 124-ball 146 from Johan Myburgh, and despite half-centuries from Rifaiz Bakas and Usman Malik Excelsior were all out in the final over for 262, Philip van den Brandeler taking four for 56 and Maurits Jonkman three for 54.
17 July
ON THIS DAY in 2016 Dosti United pulled off a remarkable last-wicket victory over Quick Haag at Nieuw Hanenburg: Quick had posted a respectable 219 for five, with Ryan Cartwright making 82, and seemed to have the game won when the ninth Dosti wicket fell at 174. But Colin Ackermann was still there, and together with A Mohammed he added the 46 needed for victory. He ended with a 116-ball not-out 98, while his partner contributed 26.
16 July
ON THIS DAY in 1905 AA van der Poll made 177 for Rood en Wit against Victoria Rotterdam at Heemstede. Ten-man Rood en Wit were all out for 454, and then dismissed the Rotterdammers – who had only nine men, one of whom was absent by the end – for just 31, to win by a stonking 423-run margin.
15 July
ON THIS DAY in 1939 LCF Wunder took all ten wickets at a cost of 90 runs for HBS in the first innings of a two-day match against HCC 2 at De Diepput; HCC made 247 and then, with a first-innings lead of 70, declared their second dig on 85 for seven. Set 156 to win, HBS finished on 108 for three. In 1984 Roland Lefebvre hit nine fours and 12 sixes in a career-best 151 not out for VOC against HBS at Craeyenhout. His knock was cut short by rain, however, with VOC on 253 for six in 43 of their 60 overs and the match was abandoned.
14 July
ON THIS DAY in 2013 Eric Szwarczynski (103) and Ben Cooper (106) shared an unbroken opening partnership of 224 in 39 overs to give VRA a 10-wicket victory over ACC in the Amsterdamse Bos. Earlier, Mudassar Bukhari had made 105 not out for ACC, but their total of 220 for five proved inadequate as the two internationals made light work of their task.
13 July
ON THIS DAY in 1913 L van Gogh hit 163 not out (including 18 fours and a six) to help Rood en Wit to 333 for seven declared against Hermes at the Spanjaardslaan. Hermes then collapsed to 88 all out, Carstjan Posthuma taking five for 47.

ON THIS DAY in 1986 Bill Bourne (who was out on 99) and Teun Jansen Schoonhoven (58) shared a third-wicket stand of 156 to set up a five-wicket victory for Rood en Wit over Quick Haag at Nieuw Hanenburg. Exactly six years later, now playing for VRA, Jansen Schoonhoven took six for 41 against Excelsior ’20 at Thurlede, but this time he was on the losing side: in a match reduced to 45 overs Excelsior chased down VRA’s 175 for five to win by two wickets.

ON THIS DAY in 1998 K Gandhi were dismissed for 64 by VRA at Amstelveen; they started the match with ten men, and Rupert Gomes, who had had coaching commitments elsewhere that morning, arrived just as the last wicket was falling. Mark Palmer set up the collapse by taking the first four wickets for 13 in a remarkable 11-over spell. VRA knocked off the runs for the loss of one wicket.
10 July
ON THIS DAY in 1994 Nathan Astle hit 173 out of VOC’s total of 262 for seven against Excelsior ’20 at Thurlede. But Emmerson Trotman made 97 for the home side, and in a thrilling finish Excelsior, with the last pair together, scored the winning run off the final ball of their 55th over.

ON THIS DAY in 1893 Achilles Leiden were dismissed for 17 and 19 by Amstel’s at Velzen; D van den Berg had figures of 9 – 6 – 5 – 5 in the first innings, following it up with 7 – 2 – 7 – 5 in the second. Amstel’s were all out for 63, but that was enough to give them a comfortable innings victory. In 1905 Carstjan Posthuma took all ten wickets at a cost of 51 runs for Rood en Wit against Amstel’s at the Meerweg in Heemstede. Despite Posthuma’s feat, Amstel’s took first-innings points, their 117 six runs more than Rood en Wit had achieved. In 2006 Michael Dighton carried his bat for VOC against VRA in Amstelveen; his unbeaten 115 got VOC to 209, but the home side reached this target with three wickets in hand. And in 2017 Eric Szwarczynski (104 not out) and Peter Borren (128, with 14 fours and six sixes) put on 214 for VRA’s fourth wicket against Quick Haag at Nieuw Hanenburg, setting up a 34-run victory.

ON THIS DAY in 1995 Ahmed Zulfiqar carried his bat for 119 not out in Voorburg’s total of 174 against VRA at Duivesteijn. The Amsterdam side could only muster 125, and Voorburg won by 49 runs. In 2006 Excelsior ’20 made a club record 346 for three against HBS at Thurlede; it was a remarkable effort, with none of the five batsmen making less than 45 and three of them – Mark Cleary, Erik Gouka and Daan van Bunge – passing 70. HBS made a reasonable fist of their reply, Billy Stelling top-scoring with 81 not out and putting on 135 for the sixth wicket with Reinout Scholte as they ended on 265 for nine.

ON THIS DAY in 1935 W van den Bosch hit 208 for HCC I against VVV at De Diepput. It was only the fifth double-century in the history of the competition, and Van den Bosch became the first player to reach the landmark twice. HCC declared at 325 for three, and then dismissed VVV for 75 to complete an overwhelming first-innings win.

ON THIS DAY in 1952 Arie Terwiel took nine for 13 for VOC against Haarlem at the Donkerelaan. It was a bowlers’ day, as P Maas earlier claimed eight for 27 as VOC were dismissed for 46, but Terwiel’s effort enabled his side to take a slender nine-run lead. VOC only managed 29 in their second dig, and Haarlem were able to secure a seven-wicket outright victory.
5 July
ON THIS DAY in 2009 John Byrom performed the hat-trick for HBS against ACC in a thrilling match at Craeyenhout. They were his only wickets, and he finished with three for 24 as ACC, chasing the home side’s 183 for nine, squeezed home by one wicket with one delivery to spare.
4 July
ON THIS DAY in 2010 Daan van Everdingen made 100 not out for VOC against Rood en Wit at the Spanjaardslaan, facing 78 deliveries and hitting 15 fours and three sixes. His innings came in a VOC total of 142 as the Rotterdammers collapsed as they chased Rood en Wit’s 250 for six; Shahbaz Bashir took six for 22 in 10 overs for the home side.

ON THIS DAY in 1938 HCC I made 333 for six declared against VOC at Lang Zestienhoven, H van den Bosch hitting 133 and JJ van der Luur 120. The home side were then dismissed for 194, JL Rutgers taking four for 56.

ON THIS DAY in 1922 W Anijs took seven for 26 and eight for 16 to finish with match figures of 15 for 42 for VVV against Hermes-DVS at the Kruislaan. VVV were 10 runs behind Hermes’ 93 on the first innings, but after dismissing their opponents for 64 in the second dig they squeezed home by two wickets. In 1994 Robbie de Widt performed the hat-trick in his figures of five for 34 for VOC against Sparta 1888 at the Couwenhoek; on the same ground exactly a year later Mike Vroom claimed a remarkable seven catches for Voorburg against Sparta.
1 July
ON THIS DAY in 2018 triplets Asad and Sikander Zulfiqar shared in an unbroken third-wicket stand of 247 for ACC against Punjab at the Zomercomplex. Asad just missed out on this century, finishing with a 111-ball 97, but Sikander hit a 124-ball 150, including 11 fours and five sixes. ACC closed on 321 for two, but Punjab fell just 30 short.
30 June
ON THIS DAY in 1940 CWV Bakker had match figures of 13 for 55 for HCC II in the Eerste Klasse Zuid match against top flight newcomers Excelsior ’20 at Thurlede. He claimed eight for 25 in the first innings as Excelsior were dismissed for 53, and then five for 30 as the Schiedammers battled their way to 73 for seven in the second. HCC made 123 all out in their innings (JJ Oosterholt seven for 48) to win on the first innings.

ON THIS DAY in 1913 JWG Coops took all ten wickets for 26 runs for HCC against Hermes at the Damlaan. The home side were all out for 67 but then, after HCC made 107, did much better in their second innings, reaching 159, and HCC had to be content with the first-innings points. Coops had match figures of 16 for 111.

ON THIS DAY in 2015 Alex Ross hit 17 fours and five sixes in a knock of 149 for Excelsior ’20 against Hermes-DVS in the Schiedam derby at Sportpark Harga. Excelsior finished with 329 for six, and Tom Heggelman took five for 40 as Hermes were bundled out for 127.

ON THIS DAY in 1976 Anton Bakker hit an unbeaten 201 for VOC against Kon. UD at the Koerhuisbeek; his innings included 21 fours and nine sixes (a record at the time), and he shared a second-wicket stand of 212 with J Ouwerkerk (65). VOC declared at 291 for three, made from just 43.2 overs, and UD then reached 258 for five in 70 overs (DJ Bekedam 138 not out) to save the game.

ON THIS DAY in 1993 Sparta 1888 beat ACC by three wickets in a thrilling last-over victory at Amstelveen: chasing ACC’s 257 (Colin Jackson six for 48) Sparta had Nolan Clarke’s 121 to thank for their win, completed with four deliveries to spare.

ON THIS DAY in 1950 Arie Terwiel took eight for 14 in 11.2 overs as Excelsior ’20 were skittled for 49 at Thurlede. VOC replied with 124, but Excelsior just managed to avoid an innings defeat, reaching 78 for nine by the close of play. Terwiel claimed another four wickets to finish with 12 for 30 for the match.

ON THIS DAY in 1995 AT Stuart performed a notable double for Sparta 1888 against Rood en Wit at the Couwenhoek, making 120 out of a total of 311 for six and then taking five for 54 as the Haarlemmers were dismissed for 145.

ON THIS DAY in 2013 Wesley Barresi hit 16 fours and nine sixes in an undefeated innings of 185 for Quick Haag against Dosti at Sportpark Drieburg. Quick closed on 323 for four, and then dismissed Dosti for 152 to complete a comfortable victory.

ON THIS DAY in 1924 Max Jansen claimed eight for 13 in 9.4 overs as VOC, replying to HCC’s 226 all out (Jansen 57), were dismissed for 26. Following on, the Rotterdammers managed 89, losing by an innings and 111 runs.

ON THIS DAY in 1998 Colin Miller hit 113 and took four for 22 for Rood en Wit against K Gandhi at the Spanjardslaan, but still finished on the losing side. The Haarlemmers reached 217 for eight in their 55 overs, but Gandhi squeezed home by one wicket with 14 deliveries to spare.

ON THIS DAY in 1915 opener C Mesman made 170 not out as Rood en Wit ran up 354 for five declared against Hermes-DVS at the Spanjaardslaan. J Offerman replied with an unbeaten 101 as Hermes battled their way to 182 for five, comfortably saving the game.

ON THIS DAY in 2016 HCC were bowled out for 48 by Dosti United at Sportpark Drieburg. Robbie Frylinck took four for 7 in seven overs and Mahesh Hans four for 8 in 7.2. Dosti took 16.1 overs to knock off the runs, and at 19 for four they seemed to be in some difficulty before Stiaan van Zyl finished it off with 16 not out.

ON THIS DAY in 1905 ‘Top’ Rincker claimed eight wickets for one run in 28 deliveries for Amstel’s as Rotterdam CC were dismissed for 9 at the Damlaan in Schiedam. The Amsterdam side, playing with ten men, then made 142, and Rotterdam did much better at the second attempt. They reached 64, but they were doubtless helped by the fact that Rincker wasn’t given the ball.

ON THIS DAY in 1900 Ajax beat Hercules outright by 3 runs at Leiden in a match in which the four innings lasted a total of 65 overs. Ajax were dismissed for 35 in 12.5 overs, and Hercules then took 23.1 overs to reach 36. The home side were skittled for 31 in 14.5 overs when they batted a second time, but they then took only 13.3 overs to bowl Hercules out for 27. CL Kooiman’s twelve wickets for 31 in 13.5 overs for Hercules was the best overall performance with the ball, while Ajax skipper and opening batsman AR Adam was the only one to reach double figures – with 11.

ON THIS DAY in 1940 Piet Sanders took nine for 30 for ACC against Hercules at Maarschalkerweerd. In 1974 Anton Bakker hit a then-record 11 sixes in making an unbeaten 119 for VOC against Rood en Wit at the Spanjaardslaan, while in 1991 Nolan Clarke hit 166 for Hermes-DVS against HCC at De Diepput.

ON THIS DAY in 1913 Lex Diemer Kool took eight for 47 for Rood en Wit against HCC at De Diepput and then made 109 as his side posted 237 all out in reply to the home side’s 141. In 1969 Zeger Cornelis was the last man to take all ten wickets in an innings, doing so at the cost of 20 runs for VOC against De Krekels at the Roggewoning; chasing just 111, De Krekels were dismissed for 79. In 2019 Jay Bista smashed 194 for Quick Haag against Voorburg at Nieuw Hanenburg, hitting 19 fours and eight sixes.

ON THIS DAY in 1891 the first match of the new Dutch competition was played between Amstel’s and Olympia Haag, in the Vondelpark in Amsterdam. Amstel’s made 72 in their first innings and then dismissed Olympia for 44, opener C de Groot carrying his bat for 28 not out (LPH Weijerman seven for 22 for Amstel’s). Amstel’s reached 38 for six in their second dig, so the game ended in a first innings victory for the home side.

ON THIS DAY in 1913 L van Gogh hit 163 not out for Rood en Wit against Hermes at the Spanjaardslaan; his side declared at 333 for seven and then bowled the visitors out for 88, winning on the first innings by 245 runs.

ON THIS DAY in 2005 Tim de Leede hit 15 fours and four sixes in a knock of 118 for Voorburg against Quick Haag at Nieuw Hanenburg, but Voorburg’s total of 204 wasn’t enough as half-centuries by Darron Reekers and Tim McIntosh steered Quick to a four-wicket victory. In 2011 Harro Seelaar (104 not out) and Greg Todd (146 not out) shared an unbroken second-wicket stand of 278 at De Diepput to beat HCC, for whom Stef Myburgh had earlier made 133, hitting ten sixes.

ON THIS DAY in 1944 Piet Sanders took seven for 20 and seven for 24 as ACC dismissed Rood en Wit for 50 and 42 at the Spanjaardslaan. JH Nijhuis claimed eight for 36 when ACC batted, but he couldn’t prevent the visitors winning on the first innings by 42 runs. In 1950 Manus Stolk carried his bat for exactly 100 in the Schiedam derby at Thurlede; his Hermes side won by 79 runs, making 185 in reply to Excelsior’s 106.

ON THIS DAY in 2001 Quick Haag posted 364 for five against K Gandhi at Nieuw Hanenburg, thanks in large measure to an 89-ball 119 by Darron Reekers which included six fours and eight sixes. Rupert Gomes made an unbeaten 87 for the Amsterdammers, but they were all out for 217.

ON THIS DAY in 1895 HCC, playing with ten men, were dismissed for 13 in just 9.1 five-ball overs (46 deliveries)at the Oosterpark in Amsterdam, when they were chasing Amstel’s 124; D van den Berg took three wickets in five overs without conceding a run. At the other extreme in 1935, J Offerman made a record-breaking 240 not out for Hermes-DVS against Rood en Wit at the Damlaan. Hermes declared on 344 for eight, but Rood en Wit replied with 348 for eight with PC Hagenaar making 139.

ON THIS DAY in 1908 Johan Hisgen claimed nine for 21 (all bowled) as Volharding dismissed Amstel’s for 40 in Heemstede; Hisgen also caught the remaining batsman, off the bowling of Albert van Renteghem. He then made 92 out of Volharding’s total of 287, perhaps one of the most dominating individual performances in the history of the competition. In 1919 JEC Schmeink took five for 15 and 8 for 11 (match figures of 13 for 26) to carry Haarlem to victory over VVV by an innings and 185 runs at the Kruislaan.

ON THIS DAY in 1914 Cees Feith struck 18 boundaries in an innings of 120 for HCC against Haarlem at De Diepput. HCC declared on 226 for four, and Haarlem battled to 107 for five before the match was drawn.

ON THIS DAY in 1909 JJ Grootmeijer took nine for 35 for VVV against HCC at the Diepput. On the same ground ninety years later, Chris Pringle claimed nine for 25 for HCC against Hermes-DVS, the best figures of the limited-overs era. In between these two feats, in 1948, W Marsden had the improbable figures of 10 – 5 – 8 – 8 for HBS against Quick Nijmegen at Houtrust; Quick were all out for 34, and after HBS declared at 110 for eight the Nijmegen side were on 78 for five at the end of the match.

ON THIS DAY in 1910 ‘Top’ Rincker took nine for 84 in 24 overs for Amstel’s against Rood en Wit at the Spanjaardslaan. But earlier the Amsterdammers had been dismissed for 139, and Rincker’s solo effort could not prevent Rood en Wit from making 234 in reply.

ON THIS DAY in 1950 WH Gallois carried his bat as HCC made 164 all out against Hermes-DVS at the Damlaan; Gallois’ share was 101, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Hermes, for whom Manus Stolk had earlier made 109 out of a total of 215. Meanwhile at Laag Zestienhoven, HC van der Bijl performed the hat-trick as VOC were dismissed for 108. He was nevertheless on the losing side as the home side bowled the Utrecht men out for 83.
3 June
ON THIS DAY in 1894 Rood en Wit posted the first total of 200+ in the competition, making 240 for nine against HCC in Heemstede (Carstjan Posthuma 120 not out). That was in reply to nine-man HCC’s total of 11 all out. It was an equally dismal day for VOC in 1923, when they were dismissed for 12 by Haarlem at the Schoterweg. Haarlem reached 58 in reply, and then VOC did much better at the second attempt, posting 138, thanks to 53 from PG East.

ON THIS DAY in 2002 Darron Reekers hit a record 15 sixes in an innings of 172 for Quick Haag against Jinnah in Abcoude. He also hit eight fours, and shared a record third-wicket stand of 273 with skipper Henk-Jan Mol (98); Quick made 323 for four, and Jinnah were dismissed for 206.

ON THIS DAY in 1905 C van Velzen took eight for 38 for Ajax Leiden against HCC at De Diepput. But HCC still made 204, and bowled Ajax out for 50 and 148 to win by an innings.

ON THIS DAY in 1981 Albert van Nierop (123 not out) and Peter Swart (113 not out) shared an unbroken third-wicket stand of 219 as VRA reached 254 for two against De Kieviten in Amstelveen in a match reduced to 45 overs. De Kieviten were then dismissed for 120 to give VRA victory by 134 runs. In 1986 Emmerson Trotman made an unbeaten 154, including 14 fours and three sixes, to help Excelsior ’20 to 264 for eight against Bloemendaal at the Donkerelaan; with Garfield Charles taking six for 60, the home side could only manage 153 in reply.

ON THIS DAY in 1993 M Dann performed a hat-trick for Kampong Utrecht against Sparta 1888 at Maarschalkerweerd. Sparta made 261 for nine, and in a thrilling finish Kampong won by two wickets with four balls to spare. Sensationally, Dann performed the same feat again the next day, this time finishing off the HBS innings on 238 at Craeyenhout and taking six for 46; this time Kampong found the chase too much for them, and ended on 213 for eight.

ON THIS DAY in 2005 Rauf Wain hit ten fours and ten sixes in an innings of 123 for VVV against Quick Haag at Nieuw Hanenburg. VVV were all out for 311, but Quick could only manage 282 in reply, and lost by 29 runs.

ON THIS DAY in 1905 a nine-man Rotterdam CC side was bowled out for 9 in their second innings against Volharding. They had managed 38 in their first knock, to which Volharding replied with 130 all out. But then followed a complete collapse, Albert van Renterghem taking three for 2 and Ferman four for 6, and Volharding won by an innings and 83 runs. The second-innings total remains a record low in the Dutch top division.

ON THIS DAY, a massive one in the history of Dutch domestic cricket, in 1990 Nolan Clarke made the highest ever individual score, hitting 265 not out for Quick Haag against Bloemendaal and sharing in an unbroken opening stand of 428 with Dick Vierling, who made 117 not out. Quick’s total is the highest of the limited-overs era. In 1912, Constant Feith of HCC became only the third player to pass 150 in a competition match, making 154 against Haarlem (which later became Bloemendaal) at De Diepput. And in an extraordinary match at the Zomercomplex in Rotterdam in 2017 Jarod Morgan of HBS smashed 11 fours and 13 sixes in a knock of 163 not out from 77 balls which enabled his side to reach 328 for five, only for Shoaib Minhas to respond in kind for Punjab. He struck 12 fours and nine sixes in a comparatively restrained 134-ball 170 not out, which saw Punjab to a five-wicket victory off the final ball of their scheduled overs. Back in 1900, AJ Nijland took all ten wickets at a cost of 34 runs as Hercules bowled Amstel’s out for 87 and won by 24 runs.

ON THIS DAY in 1918 JCW MacBryan hit 141 on his debut for Prisoners of War A, playing against Hermes at the Damlaan. In 1935, Carel Alandt became the first Dutch wicketkeeper to take six catches in an innings when he did so for VVV against Hermes-DVS at the Zuidelijke Wandelweg in Amsterdam.

ON THIS DAY in 1995 the brothers Diederik and Steven Visée posted an opening stand of 209 for HBS against ACC at Craeyenhout. Diederik made 114 and Steven 100, and HBS finished with 321 for three in their 55 overs. ACC replied with 217 for nine to give HBS comfortable victory. In 2015 Steven Smidt took eight for 14 as Quick Haag, after making 306 for six (Wesley Barresi 108), shot home side Hermes-DVS out for just 34 at Sportpark Harga.

ON THIS DAY in 1990 Peter Cantrell (116 not out) and René Schoonheim (83) put on 204 for the first wicket for Kampong against VOC at Maarschalkerweerd, setting the basis for a 60-over total of 275 for five. VOC could only manage 203 in reply, one fewer than the Cantrell-Schoonheim partnership.

ON THIS DAY in 1926 J Engering claimed eight second-innings wickets for 13 runs as Hermes-DVS dismissed VOC for 62 at the Damlaan in Schiedam. Earlier, VOC had made 102 and then bowled Hermes out for 81, but Engering’s performance left the home side needing 83 for victory, and they knocked off the runs for the loss of three wickets. Exactly fifty years later, in 1976, René Schoonheim was left on 99 not out when VOC skipper Anton Bakker declared at 268 for five against Kon. UD at Laag Zestienhoven. The declaration still came a little late, however, since the Deventer side held on to finish on 194 for eight and secure the draw.

ON THIS DAY in 1892 Rood en Wit were dismissed by Amstel’s for 15 in a match at Velzen in which 40 wickets fell in the day for a grand total of 146 runs. Batting first, Amstel’s made 37 (Posthuma five for 24, Tromp de Haas four for 7), but with Van den Berg and JC Schröder taking five for 9 and five for 4 respectively, Rood en Wit ended 22 behind on the first innings. Then Amstel’s managed 55 at their second attempt (Tromp de Haas seven for 15), and Rood en Wit again collapsed to 39 all out.

ON THIS DAY in 2009 Daan van Bunge made 155 not out for Excelsior ’20 against his old club, Voorburg, at Thurlede. He shared in a second-wicket partnership of 173 with Mark Cleary, and Excelsior finished on 313 for five. Usman Malik (another ex-Voorburger) then claimed four for 40 as the visitors were dismissed for 146.

ON THIS DAY in 1894 WR Solomon took eight for 24 including a hat-trick (probably the first in the competition) for Amstel’s against HCC at Oud-Roosenburgh in Amsterdam. Playing his first competition match, Solomon’s effort enabled Amstel’s to bowl the opposition out for 66, and the home side then made 77 to win by 11 runs. In 1906 Carstjan Posthuma took 14 wickets for 29 runs (eight for 19 and six for 10) for Rood en Wit against Ajax Leiden in Heemstede; after Rood en Wit declared at 169 for five, Posthuma’s efforts demolished the Leidenaars for 36 and 18, and his side won by an innings and 115 runs.

ON THIS DAY in 1912 Albert van Renterghem took nine for 94 in 27 overs for Volharding against Rood en Wit at the Spanjaardslaan as the Haarlemmers made 226 in reply to Volharding’s 66 all out (FMJ Holdert seven for 21). With one player absent the Amsterdam side could only manage 99 when they batted again, so despite Van Renterghem’s feat Rood en Wit won by an innings. In 1996 Roger Bradley (155) and Nick Statham (84) shared a third-wicket stand of 200 for Hermes-DVS against ACC in Amstelveen; the Schiedammers posted 314 for four in their 55 overs, and ACC could reach only 201 for nine in response.

ON THIS DAY in 1913 Wijn van Waveren had the remarkable figures of nine for 2 off 8.4 overs, with seven maidens, as Rood en Wit dismissed Hilversum for 39 at the Gnoelaan. Rood en Wit replied with 219, and then Hilversum, helped perhaps by the fact that neither Van Waveren nor Carstjan Posthuma bowled, made 123 in their second dig, losing by an innings and 57 runs.

ON THIS DAY in 2009 there were two tied matches in single day: in the Schiedam derby at Sportpark Harga Excelsior ’20 were dismissed for 164 but the Hermes-DVS innings ended on the same total when Erik Hartong was run out off the final ball of the game, while at Nieuw Hanenburg an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 64 between Jeroen Brand and Alex Pototsky could do no more than bring Quick Haag level with VOC’s 219 for nine. With six needed off the final ball, Brian Jurisich bowled a no ball which went for two, but the free hit yielded just two more and the match was tied.

ON THIS DAY in 1993 Kenny Jackson hit 209 for Voorburg against VOC at Voorburg’s old Duivestein ground. Jackson shared an opening stand of 306 with Maurits Houben (76), and the side’s total of 385 all out remains a club record for the top division. The South African then took four for 80 as the visitors managed only 272 in reply.

ON THIS DAY in 1927 JHM van Eeghen carried his bat with 53 not out for Rood en Wit against VOC at the Spanjaardslaan. It proved a match-winning effort, since VOC fell 66 short of Rood en Wit’s total of 141, PPJ Hoomans claiming six for 28 for the home side.

ON THIS DAY in 1911 Henri van Booven carried his bat for 99 not out for Hilversum against Volharding Amsterdam (later amalgamated with Amstel’s to form VRA). Hilversum were chasing the Amsterdammers’ total of 188, but they were dismissed for 160, Albert van Renterghem taking eight for 66, and Van Booven was left stranded one short of what would have been his first Eerste Klas century. He did it later in the season, however, in the return match against Volharding at the Kruislaan, where he made 103.

ON THIS DAY in 1973 Hercules beat VOC by one wicket in a low-scoring thriller at Sportpark Voordorp. Hercules bowled VOC out for 66 with Barend Stel taking seven for 17 in 21.3 overs, but then Hercules struggled in their turn, and the last pair were together when they finally scored the winning run.

ON THIS DAY in 2008, again at Amstelveen, Ryan Maron (117) and Eric Szwarczynski (116) put on 238 for the fourth wicket in a record stand which saw VRA to 323 for five against Voorburg – their second total of 300-plus in as many days. The visitors were then dismissed for 160, giving VRA the win by 163 runs. Also on this day, in 2002, Merrick Pringle took seven for 26 for VOC against Excelsior ’20 at Thurlede, and Excelsior fell just seven runs short of VOC’s 205 for eight.

ON THIS DAY in 2008 Tjade Groot hit 20 boundaries in a not-out innings of 130 as VRA amassed 320 for three against Quick Haag in Amstelveen. But then Wes Thomas matched Groot’s effort with a 119-ball 128 not out, hitting the winning runs of the last ball of the penultimate over to give Quick victory by five wickets.

ON THIS DAY in 1913 A Boeljon took five for 14 including a hat-trick for Haarlem against Hilversum at Gnoelaan in Hilversum; the hat-trick ended the Hilversum first innings on 122, and after Haarlem ended the first knock seven runs behind they bowled the home side for 69 (JEC Schmeink seven for 44) and won by three wickets.

ON THIS DAY in 2013 Quick Haag made 343 for seven against Dosti United at Craeyenhout (Lesley Stokkers 98), only to lose as Dosti replied with 346 for seven and reached their target with three balls to spare. Charles Coventry smacked a match-winning 89-ball 137 for Dosti, including 13 fours and eight sixes, and Yasir Hameed made 83.

ON THIS DAY in 1988 Roland Lefebvre took four for 11 in 12.2 overs, with seven maidens, to help VOC dismiss Hermes-DVS for 88 at Sportpark Harga. He then made 22 not out as VOC eased to a seven-wicket victory.

ON THIS DAY in 1893 Carstjan Posthuma took nine for 14 (in 12.3 five-ball overs) and five for 21 as Rood en Wit dismissed Achilles Leiden for 30 and 44 in Velzen, winning by an innings and 58 runs. Posthuma took 14 wickets in a match twice more, in 1906 and 1927.

ON THIS DAY in 1995 Nolan Clarke made 213 for Sparta 1888 against Rood en Wit at Spanjaardslaan, sharing a second-wicket partnership of 296 with AT Stuart, who was dismissed for 97 in his first Hoofdklasse innings. Sparta finished with 343 for three, and won by 65 runs. Stuart and Clarke’s stand remains an all-time competition record for the second wicket.

ON THIS DAY in 1990 Excelsior’s new pro Tim Zoehrer hit 153 on his debut for the club against Kampong at Maarschalkerweerd. But Peter Cantrell had earlier made 158 for the home side, who won a thriller by just 3 runs. 23 years later Steve Cazzulino made 101 (again a hundred on debut) and Daan van Bunge 125 not out in a third-wicket stand of 232 at Sportpark Drieburg, and Excelsior beat Dosti by 50 runs despite a fighting 87-ball unbeaten 100 from Mohammad Hafeez.

ON THIS DAY in 2008 Mark Cleary took five for 11 for Excelsior ’20 against Voorburg at Thurlede and then hit an unbeaten 63 out of 88 as Excelsior chased down Voorburg’s total and won by ten wickets. In 2013 Mudassar Bukhari took six for 29 for ACC but couldn’t prevent his side losing to Hermes-DVS by 72 runs.

ON THIS DAY in 2009 HBS Den Haag’s Tobias Visée became the eighth keeper to take six catches in a single innings in the Dutch top flight. He did it against HCC at Craeyenhout, as the opposition were dismissed for 74 to give HBS a 93-run victory; seamer Sjoerd Weurman, who provided Visée with three of those catches, had the remarkable figures of 6 – 4 – 6 – 4.

ON THIS DAY in 1993 the 22-year-old New Zealander Nathan Astle announced his arrival in the Netherlands by hitting an unbeaten 118 off 140 deliveries in Amstelveen, with seven fours and six sixes, as VOC beat VRA by six wickets. Astle played in only four matches that season, but the following year he made 1257 runs at an average of 66.16, a record season’s aggregate which still stands.
